This article explains why the product name in ChemCheck cannot be edited after a product leaves Draft and what to do if you need to correct it.
01/ Introduction
The product name is the primary identifier for your product on the ZDHC Gateway. To protect data integrity and ensure consistency across certifications, search results, and reports, the product name is locked as soon as a certification body is assigned or any certification exists (i.e. when the product moves out of Draft status). You cannot change it yourself once the product is no longer in Draft.
This is a deliberate quality control measure, not a technical limitation. The ZDHC quality team enforces strict rules around product naming to maintain the reliability of the product database.
02/ Why the product name is locked
Once a product moves out of Draft, its name may already be referenced by certification bodies, linked to Safety Data Sheets, and indexed in search. Allowing unrestricted edits after the fact could create mismatches across the platform. The lock ensures that the name you registered remains on record throughout the product's lifecycle.
Tip: Before saving a new product, double-check the spelling, capitalisation, and format of the product name. Review the name as it appears on your Safety Data Sheet. They should match.
03/ What else is locked after Draft
In addition to the product name, the following fields are locked once a product moves out of Draft (i.e. once a CB is assigned or any certification record exists):
- Product name (primary name): only ZDHC Support can change this
- Local language names and alternative names: locked after Draft
- Product classification (substrate, category, use type): only ZDHC Support can change this.
The following fields remain editable at any point after creation:
- Safety Data Sheet (SDS change by the chemical formulator removes the certificate from the ZDHC Gateway. The Certification Body can resubmit it, as long as the product still meets requirements.
- Technical Data Sheet
- Certification body assignments
04/ How to request a product name change
If you have made an error in the product name, contact ZDHC customer support to request a correction.
When submitting a request, include:
- Your organisation name
- The product ID (found on the product detail page)
- The current (incorrect) product name
- The correct product name as it should appear
- A brief explanation of the reason for the change
The quality team will review the request. Name changes are subject to approval and may take several business days to process.
Note: Name change requests are reviewed by the ZDHC quality team and are not guaranteed to be approved. If the requested name does not match the product's Safety Data Sheet, the request will likely be declined.
05/ Tips & Notes
Tip: If you regularly create products in bulk, review all product names in your bulk upload file carefully before uploading. Bulk-uploaded names follow the same locking rule — they cannot be edited after import without a support request.
