ZDHC Contributors from the Chemical Industry play a key role in removing hazardous substances at the start of the value chain. They use ZDHC Guidelines, Platforms and Solutions to increase the supply of safer alternatives and drive their use in the industry.

01/ Specific Requirements

Requirements specific to the Chemical Industry.

  1. For Memberships/Signatories – commitment to two or more of the following initiatives is preferred:

    - UN Global Compact

    - The Responsible Care© Global Charter from the ICCA (International Council of Chemical Associations)

    - The Ecological and Toxicological Association of Dyes and Organic Pigment Manufacturers (ETAD), China Dyestuff Industry Association (CDIA), Asia Dyestuff Industry Federation (ADIF), or similar

    - National or regional speciality chemicals organisations with a commitment to better chemicals e.g. for leather - Leather Working Group (LWG); UNIC (Italy), CICB (Brazil)

    - National or regional organisations with a commitment to better chemicals e.g. TEGEWA (Germany)

  2. Management Systems - required:

    - ISO 14001 certified

    - ISO 9001 certified

    - Or other Management Systems

  3. Better chemistry product offering - mandatory:

    - ZDHC Gateway - Chemical Module: Third party tested ZDHC MRSL compliant formulations (Level 3)

  4. Better chemistry product offering - mandatory:

    - BLC Chem-MAP

    - Bluesign® bluefinder

    - Clean Production Action's (CPA) GreenScreen Certified™ Standard

    - Control Union

    - ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® Programme

    - Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

    - NSF International

    - SciveraLENS®

    - ToxServices Full Materials Disclosure™ (ToxFMD™)

02/ Common question

Are there mandatory requirements for applying to be a ZDHC Chemical Industry Value Chain Affiliate?

Yes. Chemical companies must meet some mandatory requirements to be a ZDHC Contributor. Participation in the ZDHC Gateway - Chemical Module is required. They must also publicly upload their ZDHC Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (ZDHC MRSL) conformant products (Level 3).
