Where can I find the ZDHC Recycled Polyester Guidelines V1.0 and the Standard Industry Implementation Guide V1.0?
Why has ZDHC created guidelines for recycled polyester?
ZDHC has broadened the Roadmap to Zero (RtZ) Programme scope to include circularity and an ‘end-to-end’ approach, aligning with its Impact Strategy 2030. As part of this initiative, ZDHC has commenced work on recycled polyester fibres, which represent the most widely used and recycled material in global fibre production and consumption.
These guidelines were developed in collaboration with Textile Exchange and will be integrated into their upcoming Material Matter Standards for chemical management.
The ZDHC Recycled Polyester Guidelines provide a comprehensive framework for sustainable chemical management in recycled polyester production. They cover both bottle-to-textile and textile-to-textile recycling processes.
Who is in scope for the ZDHC Recycled Polyester Guidelines V1.0?
Polyester recycling facilities using pre- or post consumer textile waste, post-consumer PET bottles, or ocean-bound plastic waste and employing any of the processes listed below on a commercial scale fall within the scope of these guidelines.
Recycling techniques:
A. Mechanical and thermomechanical recycling
B. Hydrothermal process
C. Chemical recycling, Glycolysis, Glycolysis followed by transesterification, Methanolysis, Hydrolysis (acid, alkaline and neutral hydrolysis)
Who falls outside the scope of the ZDHC Recycled Polyester Guidelines V1.0?
Polyester recycling facilities using thermolysis processes (such as gasification and pyrolysis) or biological recycling methods (including enzymatic and microbial degradation) are outside the scope of these guidelines. Recycling processes that still need to be commercially viable are also excluded.
